HAPPY NEW YEAR,
We are back with new artists, and a new program . More than four hours of new music. It's really been crazy around here lately. We keep getting more and more requests for air play, and half of that comes from men!....Go figure. As if they don't already have a big enough chunk of the market.
As I have said before...Do your homework. It will save you both time and money. A few months back I received a big package in the mail. Inside were several cd's from a gospel record label, filled with gospel cd's by male gospel singers....
We neither play gospel music or music by men. All of that money wasted...

But when something like that happens, I usually gather up all of the cd's and such and donate them to a needy cause, or pass them out to friends that I think might enjoy them.
It would be a shame to just toss them and waste someones good efforts, even if they are not so inclinded to be more vigilant about their marketing strategy.

I still have a stack of new music to listen to., As well as run some things through the PJ test. I have found that PJ is more picky than I am........
Who would have ever thunk it, certainly not me. I thought I was the resident music snob. But anyway, that's the way it goes.

Women of The World
Is a new broadcast that we are working on for songbird radio. Continuing in our dedication to acoustic female performing songwriters.
Set to begin broadcasting within the next few weeks. Women of The World is a program that focus' attention on New Age, World and Classical Music.
The new program will air on AcoustiNation - Songbird Radio. Saturdays from 1 to 4pm (est) and again on Wednesday Evening from 9 to 12 pm, (est).
Our focus of course will be acoustic based music. This will run the gamut from piano, violin, guitars, percussion, and a number of world instruments, extraordinary voices and artistic vision.
As with our regular broadcast where we feature jazz divas from the past. We will also be featuring some of the most popular Classical and Opera performers on the broadcast. Afterall classical music and opera are acoustic music. Some would say the finest acoustic music.

So to kick things off we are featuring one of our new artists as the November spotlight artist.

In this recording she draws her inspiration from her roots in American folk music, and combines is with ancient Celtic modalities, percussion from the Middle East, and hauntingly beautiful tones from India and around the world. Shores of Avalon features Tina's captivating vocals accompanied by guitar, piano, violin, 12 string guitar, cello, mandicello, hammer dulcimer, and other exotic instrumentation such as Sarangi, Nickleharpa, Oud, Tabla, Frame Drum, Dumbek and more.

Including guitars, 12 string, percussion from Africa and the Middle East, dulcimer, sitara, kalimba and more. More Women In Music News
Women are 50% of the population. But when it comes to the gravy, women rarely see 50% of anything. Over the past few months I have been paying direct attention to this in the music press. Particularly publications that feature articles on performing songwriters, acoustic artists, folk, americana and singer songwriters. I choose this group because these are the types of magazines I subscribe to, the kind of music that I most often write and perform myself. Some magazines have full page ads for new releases by record labels. Some have reviews, and one has a DIY review section. Overwhelmingly women are underrepresented. I mean, come on folks, give the girls a break. At least give us a 50/50 on the reviews.
It seems that all too often if a woman is featured on a cover or given a two or three page story, the rest of that particular issue goes for the most part, to men and their music.
Don't get me wrong I love men, I think that they are great, talented and fit for praise. But I also think that women are equally deserving.
So I suggest the next time you pick up a magazine and see a mere sprinkling of women artists represented, that you contact the publication and request more in depth reporting on women artists.
Just think about it. If women were represented fairly in the music press, more great women would be receiving notice.
And I am not talking about the yearly crop of teenageish pop singers that the media tries to cram down everyone's throat, and the record companies pay insane amounts of money to have played on every pop radio station in the country. I am talking about professional women. Women who can actually play an instrument, write their own music, and perform that music, fully clothed and without simulating sex on stage, or having their voice tweaked with a vocal pitch correction device, or lip synched to backing music.
I know that the serious women artists are professional in promoting their work. I know this because that is the relationship that I have with them.
When I receive press kits in the mail from women artists, for our songbird radio broadcast. they are well put together and professionally presented.
Besides the people that we contact directly, we get an overwhelming response from artists around the world inquiring about the broadcast, and although we can't play everything, and some things don't fit our format. It is clear to me that serious women artists are getting out their and promoting their work.
Having said that, it would be silly to believe that these same women are not submitting to music publications, or that their representatives are not doing all they can to get these ladies more recognition and exposure, via. the printed word.
Just for reference I have thumbed to four full page advertisements for cd releases by record labels. On one there are ten cds, three of them are women. Another has ten with two women artists. another has a big flashy ad with three new releases, all men. And last but not least another has seven releases, all men.
Some would say that this is not an indicator, but I would say that I have been making a note to myself to check these things out on a regular basis, and it is always the same. Women are underrepresented.
So - again, I suggest that if you are a serious female performing artist and you are not getting your fair share of the press. Speak up. Nothing will happen if people don't speak up.
If you have a favorite magazine, and find that they are underrepresenting women, write them a letter.
It's like anything else. If the people of America were to stand up and support the things that they are really concerned about, we would see policy change overnight.

October, Featured Artist - Kristina Stykos

Kristina Stykos - In The Earth's Fading Light
This album combines Kristina's eclectic talents; as a celtic guitar stylist, songwriter and dig-in traditional roots musician. She has gathered friends to make a home-studio recording that is full of both grit and passion, and beauty and grace. Mostly it's just honest. The song topics cover torn apart relations, spiritual alienation, and inspired reconnection with the core of living.
Songbird Editorial Note: If they gave out Grammys for genuine honesty, Kristina Stykos, "In the Earth's Fading Light" would win hands down. Listening to Kristina Stykos' music is a sensually tactile experience. From the unpretentious nature of her singing, to the starkness and honesty in her lyrics; One is reminded of a time long gone, where only a glimmer of light filters through the forest, and a hint of an ancient flute carries down the valley to the sacred layered ground.
If you have the time visit Kristinas website, read about her life and music. It is a wonderful story, of evolution and discovery.
